Support The Courts

The basketball courts on Bateman Road.

Perhaps you’ve noticed:  The  public basketball courts on Bateman Road are full of cracks and need to be resurfaced so people can use them safely.  These courts are used by the entire Shelter Island community, including homeowners, renters, guests and visitors; and not only for basketball, but also for touch football, kickball, skateboarding, and kids learning to ride bicycles, as well as just socializing.

A view of the serious cracks in the asphalt

Over the past few years, volunteer Islander George Kneeland, Lion Jim Read and other community members have worked with the Shelter Island School and Town to replace the basketball backboards and have had many discussions regarding the much needed resurfacing.  Last year the school received a substantial donation ($6K) that was used to replace the six backboards in Phase 1 of a project being called Support the Courts. Now, in Phase 2, the project is seeking donations towards resurfacing the asphalt and other enhancements, with an approximate total cost of $36,000.  The work will involve treating the cracks, resurfacing, painting the lines, fixing drainage issues and landscaping.

The courts are in frequent use.

While a GoFundMe campaign site is being prepared, the Shelter Island Lions Club Foundation is  accepting donations on behalf of the Support the Courts project.

Exciting news: A generous, anonymous donation has been made that will match the first $15,000 received toward the Support the Courts fundraising goal.
